The great thing about this game is that you don’t have to hit 300 yards drive to play or score well. We have a tendency to try and play like the person we play with or use the same golf clubs. Larry hits his three wood from here I should be able to do that too.The fact is that we are all unique!
I like to break the golf course down into parts. Lets take an average par 4. Lets say it is 300 yards. WOW that seems so far! So I see Big Ben take out his driver and try to drive it as far as he can! Now Big Ben is a big guy and can hit the ball 300 yards. The problem is that if I gave him ten chances on the tee he may hit three in the middle of the fairway.
So here’s the plan. What if we hit the ball 100 yards 3 times? We can then one putt for par or two putt for bogey. I know that if I gave Big Ben his pitching wedge and ten tries at the tee he will hit eight out of ten in the fairway. I like those odds much better. I think that most of us would be thrilled with bogey golf (low 90’s).
Another smart choice would be to use your favorite club. My favorite club is my seven wood. I can use it off the tee, in the fairway or in the rough. I can still score very well and have fun because I am spending most of my time in the fairway instead of the trees (well cactus here in AZ).
It is fun to be creative on the course. Just because you are 250 yards away from the pin doesn’t mean you have to use your three wood. Break it into chunks that are more manageable! When you hit the ball more solid and in the fairway, the confidence you build will make you play better!
